The Six Keys of Success
To become successful with anything, there are six keys.
- Attitude
- Knowledge
- Tools
- Techniques
- Time
- Imagination
Leave one out and it affects the degree of success. Each key needs to be treated as a cup and as you fill each cup, so will the degree of your success be determined.
Attitude
Positive, progressive, natural. There is no other way with horses. How do you stay positive when you are frustrated, when your horse defies you or it gets the better of you? How do you keep making progress when the only way seems to be connected with competition or riding lessons, and it seems so slow? How do you keep it natural when many tack stores and experts tell you that a bigger bit, tie down, gag or martingale is the answer?
The Parelli Program develops mental and emotional fitness, how to be cool, calm and collected not matter what.
It is also very progressive, developing inner competition by challenging you and your horse with inventive tasks which are fun to do and at the same time promote mental, emotional and physical fitness in both you and the horse.
The program keeps it natural. Thats the law of nature. To use communication, psychology and understanding instead of force, fear and intimidation. This means savvy and it involves much more than being a good rider.
Respect the laws of nature.
Knowledge
It’s endless, there is so much to know about horses, how they think, how they learn, what’s important to them, how to communicate with them. Our true potential with horses is untapped in every area. Most people do not ask very much of horses, and most of us have no idea what they really are capable off.
Get to know the truth about horses.
Most people think expertise with horses involves riding more than anything else. But this is less than half of what you really need to know. Parelli Natural Horsemanship teaches savvy in four areas with horses: on line, at liberty, riding freestyle and with finesse. We also strive to understand and use the psychology of the horse, to keep challenging boundaries of accepted norms and traditions. We always consider the horse’s point of view and seek to become as good with horses as other horse. When you are green you are grown, when you’re ripe you’re rotten!

Tools
No gimmicks, no gadgets. Keep it simple, kind and effective. We use only a few tools but are very particular about their quality and function. Essentially these comprise high quality smooth ropes, soft rope halter, natural hackamores, sweet iron snaffles and responsive reins. We are so particular we make them ourselves, you can’t buy anything that even comes close. The Key is savvy. When you have savvy you need very little else to be effective with horses.

Techniques
To be successful, every technique used must have the following ingredients: Attitude, focus, feel, timing, balance. Quality of feel is almost impossible to learn through traditional methods, however Pat Parelli has a unique system that causes this quality to evolve naturally. Parelli Natural Horsemanship is a wonderfully logical program for horses, but even better is its capacity to develop a level of expertise in people so they can experience the rewards of teaching their horse themselves.
Learn to feel.
Time
How much time do you get to spend with your horse? Is it always enjoyable and stimulating? Would you enjoy spending more time if it was more interesting and rewarding?
You need to invest time to learn, time to practice, time to reap the rewards.
The element of time is critical, you can’t get better if you don’t invest a certain amount of time with your horse. But with Parelli Natural Horsemanship the results are rewarding, they are quick. And best of all you pick up where you left off because these are not tricks, they are a solid communication and foundation that you keep building on with your horse.
Because of the system progress is not lost between intervals.
Imagination
Horses, for the most part, are bored with people. They are not mentally and emotionally stimulated, their bodies are exercised but their minds do whatever they want. Many horses are also emotionally stressed because their needs are not taken care of and because they’re often confused by the commands and force used on them.
